Wal-Mart Wants to Enter the Banking Business

Wal-Mart Stores Inc. is prepared to ask the U.S. federal government permission to operate its own in-house bank. It is expected to petition the U.S. Federal Deposit Insurance Corp. Monday to open a bank for checks and credit card payments.

“It’s a landmark battle in both U.S. business and financial services history,” said Jerry Comizio, a financial services lawyer for Thacher Proffitt & Wood LLP. Opponents are afraid such a venture could hurt local banks.

The American Bankers Association said in testimony prepared for Monday’s hearing, “The ABA believes that banking is too important to the nation to try such a risky experiment.” Wal-Mart promises that it will stay out of consumer banking.

A Ross County jail inmate hid a gun so well that not even the guards who did an extensive pat-down found it.

The Cleveland woman hid a loaded handgun inside her body and smuggled it all the way to her jail cell, where it accidentally fired when she was trying to hide it.

"While in the holding cell, she removed a .25-caliber semiautomatic from her vaginal cavity," Chillicothe Police Capt. Tom Hewitt said yesterday.

Victoria Lundy, 41, hid the gun in the toilet-paper holder. It fell to the floor and discharged. The bullet lodged in the ceiling as guards scrambled to quickly recover the weapon, Hewitt said.

The British are in 8th place and the French in 19th place according to a new European league of IQ scores. Professor Richard Lynn of the University of Ulster states that Brits have an average IQ of 100 while the French average IQ is 94.
The top IQ scorers were the Germans with an average 107 IQ. The Dutch, Poles, Swedes, Italians, Austrians, and Swiss also beat out the Brits. An IQ range of 85 to 115 is classified as normal while 145 or more is exceptionally gifted.
Professor Lynn whose studies have concluded that men are on average 5 IQ points smarter than women [SN reported], has also concluded that climate plays a role in brain development, specifically colder climates demonstrate an increase in brain size.

David Mason, 27, was raided by Vice squad officers and they discovered 5,000 obscene films and 16 DVD burners set up to his computer in his home at The Village, Charlton, south-east London.
Mason was stopped by officers in September.
He was running a large scam of video's and DVD copying operation from his bedroom producing thousands of copies many involved urination and various other degrading acts".
Mason pleaded guilty to a string of offences they included possession of obscene material for publication for gain, handling stolen goods and holding a fake warrant card.
He was Jailed for nine months.

Man Killed After Mooning Teens

Philadelphia, Pa - Martin Malone was killed by two teenagers outside the city of Philadelphia. The teens, Christopher McEneaney, (16) & Andre Mark, (18) spotted Malone sifting through trash.
The teens began to taunt Malone, calling him a "bum" and other names. Malone responded by barring his buttocks at them. The teens threw rocks at Malone, eventually stabbing him with a multi-tool & bludgeoning him with a shovel.
The two teens were arrested after witnesses provided police with a description of their clothing. According to Malone's sister Molly Munsell, he had been living with her for about a year.

Burger King Employee Arrested After Jumping Through Drive-Up Window to Attack a Customer

18-year old Michael Perez, a Burger King employee, was arrested and charged with burglary with battery after he assaulted a customer. The incident occured when the customer, Kevin Gillis, was attempting to pay for an order of fries.
According to Gillis's wife Dana,"He snatched a five-dollar bill from my husband's hand." Gillis & Perez exchanged verbal insults which escalated. Gillis attempted to drive forward, when Perez climbed through the window and punched Gillis in the face.
Mrs. Gillis & her children exited the vehicle, not before Perez attempted to hit her as well. Gillis jumped out of the truck and tackled Perez to the ground. Police were called and Perez was arrested. He remains held in jail without bond.

The software, known as eyePilot, works by allowing the user to place the cursor over the area they want to view and eyePilot reports what the color is. Click on the color's name and all instances of that particular color will flash.

BRANDON - A teenage boy was accidentally killed Monday night when he was slashed by a sword that dislodged from a bedroom wall while he and his siblings were playing with a ball in the room, officials said.

Hillsborough County Sheriff’s Office spokeswoman Debbie Carter said Joshua Hershberger, 15, was playing with his brother, 14, and sister, 9, when the accident happened about 8:10 p.m.

The three were playing in a bedroom at 101 Valley Drive, bouncing a basketball-size ball off the walls, Carter said. Hershberger and his brother were sitting on the floor when a 29-inch sword hanging on one of the walls fell, slashing him in the neck and shoulder.

Hershberger was taken to Brandon Regional Hospital, where he was pronounced dead. He was a sophomore at Brandon High School, Carter said.

No charges are expected to be filed, she said.

A Swedish man who donated sperm to a lesbian couple has been ordered to pay child support for their three children.

In the early 1990s the man, now 39, donated his sperm to a woman in a lesbian relationship. She had three sons, the oldest of whom is now 13 years old.

Although the man signed a document confirming he was the biological father of the children, he told the court the women agreed he would not be involved in their upbringing in any way.

But when the women separated, the biological mother of the three boys demanded child support payments from the man.

He went to court but lost the case and the subsequent appeal before taking the matter to the Supreme Court, the highest appeals court in the country.

The Supreme Court has confirmed the earlier rulings, stating that the biological father is required to pay child support to the mother of the three children he indirectly fathered.

MAN SAWS OFF OWN LEGS'

A MAN who claimed a chainsaw gang chopped off his legs did it himself, police said yesterday.

The unnamed van driver told them he was dragged from his vehicle by attackers who hacked at his legs with the saw before torching his Transit.

But police revealed they now believe he turned the saw on himself.

Retired policeman Jim Edgar, 61, found the man lying on the ground screaming at an isolated spot in Shilton, near Witney, Oxon, on Wednesday.

He said: "Blood was gushing all over the place."

A police source said: "It looks as if he did it to himself. The pain must have been horrific. God knows what possessed him."

Officers would not comment on whether doctors had saved his legs.

The man was still under heavy sedation yesterday.

Woman Allegedly Faked Own Death to Avoid Traffic Charges

Des Moines, Iowa - Kimberly Du has been arrested and charged with forgery. Du allegedly faked her own death to avoid traffic charges. An anonymous person claiming to be Du's mother used forged documents to convince the court Du had died.
An arrest warrant issued for Du was tossed by a judge after the documents were received by the courthouse clerk. Du was stopped for speeding and driving with a suspended license on Jan.4th, enabling authorities to catch on to the the ruse.
After further investigating authorities were able to prove the supposed obituary never appeared in a newspaper nor was a funeral held. If convicted, Du faces up to two years in prison. Du is currently being held on $50,000 bond.

On March 3, 1991 African-American motorist Rodney King had been stopped in the Lake View Terrace district by Los Angeles police assisted by other law enforcement. King, who had a record of drunk driving and was believed to be under the influence of PCP, resisted arrest and was tasered, tackled, and beaten with nightsticks by four LAPD officers (three whites and one Hispanic). The incident was captured on video by a private citizen, and it became an international media sensation and a touchpoint for minority activists in Los Angeles and the United States. Eventually the Los Angeles district attorney charged the four with the use of excessive force in the beating. Due to the media coverage of the beating, the trial received a change of venue to a newly constructed courthouse in predominantly white Simi Valley, a Ventura County city. Contrary to popular belief, however, no Simi Valley residents served on the jury, which had been empaneled in Los Angeles County; the jury was, however, drawn from nearby San Fernando Valley. On April 29, 1992, the jury returned an acquittal on all but one count.

Teacher Faces Suspension after Student Urinates in Trash Can

Lesley Campbell, a teacher at Clearwater High School, Fl, faces a potential 10 day suspension after denying a students request on Nov 17 to use the restroom. The student grabbed a trash can and went into the classroom walk-in closet and urinated.
The school district has cited Campbell for violating a policy which prohibits teachers from exposing students to unnecessary embarrassing moments and making inapproriate remarks.

Marijuana Package Mailed Without Address
MILL VALLEY, Calif. (AP) - A man who allegedly mailed a half-pound of marijuana without an address label on the package was arrested after authorities returned it to its sender.

Steven Coburn, 48, of Mill Valley was arrested Tuesday on suspicion of drug possession for sale and investigators found another 1 1/2 pounds of marijuana worth $10,000 at his home behind Tamalpais High School, said Det. Matt Lethin of the Marin County Major Crimes Task Force.

The private Corte Madera shipping company where Coburn tried to mail the package on Feb. 16 followed company protocol by opening the package to see whether the label was accidentally sealed inside, Lethin said.

"Once they opened it up and saw what was inside, they immediately called law enforcement," Lethin said.

Investigators said they are not sure whether Coburn forgot to affix the address label or it fell off, but it had a return address on it that led to Coburn.

He was booked into Marin County Jail and posted bail. A court date was set for March 8.

Sudan man forced to 'marry' goat

A Sudanese man has been forced to take a goat as his "wife", after he was caught having sex with the animal.
The goat's owner, Mr Alifi, said he surprised the man with his goat and took him to a council of elders.
They ordered the man, Mr Tombe, to pay a dowry of 15,000 Sudanese dinars ($50) to Mr Alifi.
"We have given him the goat, and as far as we know they are still together," Mr Alifi said.
Mr Alifi, Hai Malakal in Upper Nile State, told the Juba Post newspaper that he heard a loud noise around midnight on 13 February and immediately rushed outside to find Mr Tombe with his goat.
"When I asked him: 'What are you doing there?', he fell off the back of the goat, so I captured and tied him up".
Mr Alifi then called elders to decide how to deal with the case.
"They said I should not take him to the police, but rather let him pay a dowry for my goat because he used it as his wife," Mr Alifi told the newspaper.

A clerk at a GetGo station made a horrifying discovery last night after a man walked into the minimart and asked her to heat something wrapped in a paper towel in the store's microwave.

When the item in the microwave gave off an unusual odor, the clerk opened the over door, unwrapped the paper and found what appeared to be a severed human penis, according to KDKA-TV.

The clerk immediately called police, but the man who handed the item to the clerk fled from the store on Fifth Avenue, KDKA reported.

McKeesport police declined comment last night.

SALEM, Ore.- Nicholas Meyrovich, 60, an exterminator, was exterminating a woman's house who lived in Salem on October of 2003 when he took hold of the woman and started to kiss her.

Man Charged With Killing Roommate Over Toilet Tissue

MARION COUNTY, Fla. -- A man has been arrested for fatally beating his roommate with a sledgehammer and a claw hammer because there was no toilet tissue in the home, authorities said.Franklin Paul Crow, 56, has been charged Monday with homicide for the death of Kenneth Matthews, 58, according to the Marion County Sheriff's Office.

Crow told investigators that the men were fighting over the weekend about the toilet tissue when Matthews pulled out a rifle. Crow said he then began beating Matthews with the sledgehammer and claw hammer, according to an affidavit.

Capt. Thomas Bibb said Crow initially denied his involvement with the crime, but confessed when questioned.

Matthews was beaten so badly he had to be identified through his fingerprints, detectives said.

Miss Liu confessed that Guo-li-zhuang was an unusual place to work, partly because of her training - she has to recite tales proving the vigour of the animals in question as they are being eaten - and partly because of the interaction with the clientele. "I did find it embarrassing at first," she said. "And sometimes the customers take advantage of me by asking rude questions."

As for the supposed health benefits, Mr Liu, the most regular customer, was uncertain but hopeful. "I can't say I've noticed any difference yet," he said. "But it's a long-term thing."

Girl's Prosthetic Leg Stolen a Second Time
For the second time in recent months, somebody broke into a 16-year-old girl's home and stole her prosthetic leg — including one that had been donated following the first crime, authorities said.

The thieves took a $12,000 cosmetic leg and a donated $16,000 leg that Melissa Huff uses to play softball, her mother, Lisa Huff, said. She said a camera in the room was untouched.

"It's insane. Who hates her that bad?" Lisa Huff said. "I went back to the girls' room and the room was trashed. Mostly Melissa's stuff."

In the first theft, on Nov. 1, someone cut a hole in a window screen and also took video games and other items, authorities said. Her doctor and two real estate finance companies donated money for a new, shock-absorbent "sports leg" with a flexible foot.

On Tuesday, the thief pried open a screen window in the home, about 12 miles east of Los Angeles, said sheriff's Sgt. Russell Sprague. He said authorities have no leads.

Melissa's right leg was amputated two years ago after she was struck by a car. She resumed playing competitive softball after the accident and is now a high school sophomore.

"Now, she has nothing to walk with," said her father, David Huff.

Man Steals from his Dead Mother's Morphine Drip

BARNSTABLE, MA - Robert S. Peatie, 37, who police say has a history of drug abuse, was arrested for stealing the morphine from his mother's interveinous drip just moments after she died. A nurse caught the suspect pouring it into a water bottle.
Linda Peatie, 62, had died from an undisclosed illness. Nurse Maureen Beckler had left Peatie in the room alone while she sought out a physician to pronounce the woman dead. Peatie fled when Beckler returned to catch him stealing the morphine.
Police later found Peatie at a nearby restaurant and took him into custody. He apparently admitted to the theft and told police that he had been sipping the morphine from his water bottle. Peatie was jailed on $2,000 dollars bond.

On this day in 1865, in the midst of his 'March to the Sea' during the Civil War, General William T. Sherman and Secretary of War Edwin M. Stanton met with 20 Black community leaders of Savannah, Georgia. Based in part to their input, Gen. Sherman issued Special Field Order #15 on January 16, 1865, setting aside the Sea Islands and a 30 mile inland tract of land along the southern coast of Charleston for the exclusive settlement of Blacks. Each family would receive 40 acres of land and an army mule to work the land, thus "forty acres and a mule." Gen. Rufus Saxton was assigned by Sherman to implement the Order. On a national level, this and other land, confiscated and abandoned, became the jurisdiction of the Freedman's Bureau, which was headed by Gen. Oliver Otis Howard (Howard University).

In his words he wanted to "...give the freedmen protection, land and schools as far and as fast as he can." However, during the summer and fall of 1865, President Johnson issued special pardons, returning the property to the ex-Confederates. Howard issued Circular 13, giving 40 acres as quickly as possible. Upon his knowledge, Johnson ordered Howard to issue Circular 15, returning the land to the ex-Confederates.

Man Reports Marijuana Stolen - Arrested as He Claims his Dope

OREM, Utah - Reporting his illegal substances stolen wasn't the smartest thing 18-year-old Kory C. Tippetts could have done. Once police recovered his dope, they arrested him when he claimed it as his own.
Tippetts contacted police on Monday when he returned home to find that his home had been burglarized. He reported that someone had broken a window to gain entry and stole his 1/4 pound of marijuana that he intended on selling.
Tippetts had a suspect in mind. When police followed up on the investigation, they arrested the suspect and recovered the marijuana. When Tippetts showed up at the police station to claim his weed, he was promptly arrested on drug charges.

Sweeping anti-abortion laws proposed

Legislators in at least five states are proposing bold anti-abortion measures as the Bush administration reshapes the U.S. Supreme Court, a report said.
With the goal of challenging the Roe vs. Wade ruling that ensured a woman's right to an abortion, lawmakers in Georgia, Indiana, Ohio, South Dakota and Tennessee propose banning all abortions except when the woman's life is in danger, Stateline.org reported.
If enacted, legal experts said the laws would be the first absolute abortion bans since the landmark 1973 ruling.
However, some abortion foes worry that state bans could backfire especially since five pro-Roe justices remain in the Supreme Court.
It's as predictable as the sun rising that lower courts would strike down such state bans, said Americans United for Life Director Clarke Forsythe.
It would be better to pass legislation "that can be enforced," such as parental notification requirements and fetal pain warnings, the constitutional lawyer told the state issues organization.

Client needed op after prostitute bit penis

A PROSTITUTE who bit her client's penis so hard he required an operation has denied grievous bodily harm with intent.

Prosecutor Matthew McNiff told the jury Louise Jowett carried out the attack because Brett O'Leary, from Clare, near Haverhill, told her he had no more money to give her after already paying her for sex.

Outlining the case Mr McNiff said 22-year-old Jowett, who denies the charge, had bitten and continued to bite Mr O'Leary for up to 45 seconds during the assault. The force and determination of Jowett's attack was said to have led to Mr O'Leary requiring an operation.

The court heard during the early hours of September 3 last year Mr O'Leary was in the Brownswood Road area of London cruising for a prostitute.

He pulled up by the kerb and Jowett, of Holborn, London, ran to his car. Mr McNiff said as she approached she greeted him with words to the effect of "hello, stranger." The jury was told she had known him previously, and having greeted him got into the car.

When negotiations were complete she agreed to travel with him to his home 60 miles away in Clare on condition she was paid upfront.

The court heard she used the money to purchase drugs via a telephone call while on the way. The pair arrived at Mr O'Leary's home about 2am. Jowett by this time had taken the drugs and they shared a bottle of champagne before having sex.

It was alleged that afterwards she asked Mr O'Leary for more cash, becoming more aggressive as her requests continued. While performing a sex act on Mr O'Leary he told her he did not have any more cash.

Mr McNiff said she took his penis in her mouth and gripped it between her teeth. He said: "She bit hard. She bit very hard. This caused what Mr O'Leary described as indescribable pain."

The jury heard Mr O'Leary tried to prise open Jowett's mouth with his hands while she made sounds like an animal. He pleaded with her and he begged her to let go while hitting her to try to get her off.

Mr McNiff said there was a lot of blood while Mr O'Leary screamed and then ran to call 999.

The jury heard that when interviewed by police Jowett told them she had never met Mr O'Leary before and she had acted to protect herself. She claimed he had raped her and forced her to perform a sex act on him and the only thing she could do was bite him.

The case continues at Ipswich Crown Court.

Former Saddam Air Force General: WMD Moved To Syria
I know this goes against the narrative the media and the left want everyone to believe, but another source claims that Saddam's WMDs were moved out of Iraq and into Syria prior to the country's liberation by coalition forces.

The man who served as the no. 2 official in Saddam Hussein's air force says Iraq moved weapons of mass destruction into Syria before the war by loading the weapons into civilian aircraft in which the passenger seats were removed.

The Iraqi general, Georges Sada, makes the charges in a new book, "Saddam's Secrets," released this week. He detailed the transfers in an interview yesterday with The New York Sun.

"There are weapons of mass destruction gone out from Iraq to Syria, and they must be found and returned to safe hands," Mr. Sada said. "I am confident they were taken over."

On Tuesday of this week, regular Los Angeles Times columnist, Joel
Stein, wrote a piece titled "Warriors and Wusses" in which he began:

"I DON'T SUPPORT our troops."

Stein goes on to explain that he is, "not for the war. And being
against the war and saying you support the troops is one of the wussiest
positions the pacifists have ever taken - and they're wussy by definition.
It's as if the one lesson they took away from Vietnam wasn't to avoid
foreign conflicts with no pressing national interest but to remember to
throw a parade afterward."

Mr. Stein told the news media today he stands by his column, despite
the controversy being generated.

Well isn't that nice.

Hundreds of thousands of men and women are risking their lives to
protect American citizens like Joel Stein from terrorist attack. They also
protect his freedom and rights to say asinine things in column and
laugh it all off with a smirk.

About the only thing you can say for him is that he is at least honest.
Those who have been protesting in the protests organized by MoveOn.org
against the war on terrorism really don't support our troops.

That's why instead of sending cards and letters of support to the
troops, they instead chose to heckle the wounded veterans at Walter Reid
Medical Center, or to travel the Jesse Jackson-Al Sharpton-Martin Sheen
circuit with Cindy Sheehan.

I'd like to ask that you explain to Mr. Stein how lucky he is that
these men and women have given such sacrifice and service. He obviously
does not recognize the importance of the war against terrorism. He
obviously does not realize that when you have al-Qaida bases in Iraq and
Afghanistan, where terrorists train to kill Americans, it's not so bad to
have our heroic men and women of the U.S. Armed Forces go in and do
something about it.

Please, be civil, but firm when contacting him. I would like to think
that if thousands of Americans wrote him a note explaining all the good
things our troops were doing, and why he should support THEIR MISSIONS
that it might make an impact on him and cause him to stop and think.

And next, please contact the editor of the Los Angeles Times, Mr. Dean
Baquet, and ask him why it is that the L.A. Times consistently finds
itself at the center of controversy for pushing a radical far-left
agenda.

They've used their front page to attack Republican candidates, they've
used their editorial pages to urge support for liberal causes.

And now their columnists are urging Americans to stop showing support
for our troops.

Car Condensation Keeps Trapped Woman Alive

An 88-year-old woman, trapped in her car for six days after driving off the road on the way home from the grocery store, sustained herself by wiping condensation off the windshield with a towel and sucking the moisture, her son says.

Mary Lillian Anderson was in satisfactory condition Thursday at Southwest Washington Medical Center.

She was rescued Wednesday by a delivery truck driver who noticed the car stuck in blackberry bushes just off Interstate 5 and peered inside. He says he was braced for the sight of a body.

"She was sitting right there, staring back at me," said Andrew Thompson, who delivers propane in rural Clark County. "She looked very happy."

Anderson disappeared Jan. 6 after she misjudged a corner, drove across a broad gravel-covered shoulder and tipped her car into a steep drop-off filled with blackberry bushes.

Her 1997 Cadillac Seville was hidden from view but within earshot of I-5.

She was reported missing Jan. 7 when her neighbors at the Whipple Creek Condominiums noticed she hadn't come home.

The Clark County sheriff's office issued a missing persons report but did not conduct a search because they didn't know where to begin, Detective Rick Buckner said. When Buckner found no activity on Anderson's credit cards or bank account, he feared she was dead.

Sometime Monday or Tuesday, a deputy pulled a car over in the gravel turnout a few feet from Anderson's car, but thick blackberry bushes and other brush blocked the officer's view of her car.

Thompson said the height of his truck's cab gave him a perfect view Wednesday of the cranberry-colored car down the embankment.

"If there had been leaves on the trees, I don't think she would have made it, I wouldn't have been able to see her," he said.

"The lady is just very, very lucky to be alive," Buckner said.

Thompson said he tried to open the car door but found it wedged shut.

"I yelled back to her that I was going to get help," he said. He climbed back up the bank, called 911, and then went back to the car. In time he was able to wrench open the door, and he waited with Anderson for rescue crews.

"She held my hand," he said.

One of Anderson's sons, Rob Johnson of Pendleton, Ore., said his mother's groceries were out of reach in the trunk. She kept herself distracted by harvesting water and by praying, talking to her guardian angel and counting to 500 and back, over and over again, he said.

"We're very thankful to him," he said of Thompson. "He's definitely sort of an angel."

I just wanted to thank you all for taking the time and trouble to send me "forwards" over the past 12 months

Extra thanks to whoever sent me the one about rat crap in the glue on envelopes, because I now have to go get a wet towel every time I need to seal an envelope.

Also, I have to scrub the top of every can I open for the same reason.

Because of your concern, I no longer drink Coca Cola because it can remove toilet stains. I no longer drink Pepsi or Dr. Pepper, since the people who make these products are atheists who refuse to put "Under God" on their cans. I no longer use Saran wrap in the microwave
because it causes cancer.

I no longer check the coin return on pay phones because I could be pricked with a needle infected with AIDS. I no longer use cancer-causing deodorants, even though I smell like a
water buffalo on a hot day. I no longer go to shopping malls because someone might drug me with a cologne sample and rob me.

I no longer receive packages from, nor send packages by, UPS or FedEx since they are actually Al Qaeda in disguise. I no longer answer the phone, because someone will ask me to dial a number for which I will get a phone bill with calls to Jamaica, Uganda, Singapore and Uzbekistan.

I no longer eat KFC because their chickens are actually horrible mutant freaks with no eyes or feathers. I no longer have any sneakers -- but that will change once I receive my free replacement pair from Nike.

I no longer have to buy expensive cookies from Neiman Marcus since I now have their recipe.

I no longer leave the one I love for the one I like because the one that I like will leave me for the one they love... Every night my true love will realize how much they still love me. Between 1 & 4 in the afternoon, everyday the shock of my life will occur.

I no longer worry about my soul because at last count I have 363,214 angels looking out for me. Thanks to you, I have learned that God only answers my prayers if I forward an e-mail to seven of my friends and make a wish within five minutes.

I no longer have any money because I gave them to a sick girl who is about to die in the hospital (for the 258th time) but that will change once I receive the $15,000 that Microsoft and AOL are sending me for participating in their special email program.
