South Africa Legalises Same-Sex Marriage

The highest court in South Africa has ordered the government in the country to allow same-sex marriages within the year. The Constitutional Court stated that laws be amended to define marriage as a "union between two persons".
Justic Albie Sachs said: "The common law definition of marriage is declared to be inconsistent with the constitution and invalid to the extent that it does not permit same-sex couples to enjoy the status and benefits it accords heterosexual couples."
The case was brought to the Constitutional Court by the home affairs department, which was appealing a ruling by the Surpreme Court that ruled current laws discriminate against homosexuals.
